I love this time of year. Family, friends, food, and joy everywhere. There is nothing I enjoy more than spending time with loved ones over a good meal and glass of wine.
Unfortunately, this year is a little different for me. Recurring health issues and sickness has made for an interesting several weeks. Committing to a strict diet of only vegetables and water, then eventually adding in a few other foods, has been everything short of enjoyable (especially during the best time of year!!!). If you don’t know by now, food is one of my favorite things. Not only is it essential for our health, but it’s a huge part of our social lives, celebratory occasions, and even times when we need comfort. Good food is just one of those things I find great enjoyment in. So, restricting my diet right now has been such a struggle, mentally and physically. I’m learning now more than ever, how much food really does affect our energy, mental state, and strength. Helloooo, lethargy, headaches, hunger pains, etc. Not to mention, this all started while trying to launch my FOOD blog… Great timing. Shout out to my fiance, family, and co-workers for hanging around me during this time.
One positive that resulted from this inconvenient time, is a change in my attention and focus. I have had more time and mental energy to focus on my relationships with others and God. Freeing my mind from the joys (and burdens) that food brings, I can switch my focus to all the other things that bring joy into my life! Two verses came to mind that very well describe my thoughts during this whole process:
- 1 John 2:16 says, “For everything in the world- the lust of flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life- comes not from the Father but from the world.” I’m convinced that the enemy is trying real hard to distract me from all the wonderful blessings I have in my life. Although, I am currently unable to cook and eat in ways I enjoy, I know there are many things to be grateful for… my family, fiance, friends, a decent apartment, a great job, a physically strong body, and so much more.
- Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with Thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Jesus Christ.” And this is exactly what I have been striving to do throughout this season in life, and will continue to. Sometimes (more often, than not), it’s easier said than done. But, practice makes perfect and this is the perfect time to practice… Right?
I don’t know what you’re struggle is this season. Unfortunately, the enemy will always be there to invoke temptations, struggles, and inconveniences in our lives. But, lucky for us, our God is greater, stronger, and love us more than we can ever know. He fights our battles for us and surrounds in with an army of angels, so that we can live full and joyful lives. How great is that?
